SIU clears 2 officers in Huntsville detention case
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, has cleared 2 Ontario Provincial Police officers of any criminal wrongdoing related to a 42 year-old man who suffered medical distress while in custody.
On May 24th, police responded to reports of a man waving a gun in Huntsville, where he was found with illicit substances and subsequently arrested.
The following morning, he was discovered in distress in his cell and later diagnosed with a decreased level of consciousness due to drug ingestion, including benzodiazepines, cocaine, and fentanyl.
Martino concluded that the officers acted with appropriate care for the man's health and confirmed that all illicit substances were removed prior to his detention.
The man's condition resulted from drug use before his arrest.
