SIU clears officer who punched a man that resulted in a concussion
The Special Investigations Unit has cleared an Ontario Provincial Police officer of criminal wrongdoing in connection with a 2022 incident involving a 30-year-old man who suffered a concussion.
Director Joseph Martino found no reasonable grounds for criminal charges after re-opening the case in August 2023.
The man, arrested in Bracebridge for assaulting a woman, became violent while being placed in a cell, leading the officer to deliver multiple punches. While the additional punches may not have been strictly necessary, Martino concluded they were not excessive given the violent context.
