Spoofing on the rise
Police say Ontario residents are being targeted by deceptive phone calls designed to trick them into sharing personal information or making fraudulent payments. Scammers use caller ID spoofing to make it appear as though calls are coming from local numbers, businesses, or government agencies, creating a false sense of trust.
Common tactics include "neighbouring," where the first six digits of a number match the recipient's, and "mirroring," where a scammer makes it look like you're calling yourself.
Officials say to let unknown calls go to voicemail, never share personal information, and report suspicious calls to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
