The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is urging residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites after mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile virus in the region.

Though no human cases have been reported in 2024, a dead bird in Oro-Medonte also tested positive.

The health unit says to reduce your risk, use mosquito repellent, wear light-colored clothing, and cover up in mosquito-prone areas.

Symptoms of West Nile virus include fever, headache, and muscle weakness.
